Exercise: Exploring Function .
In compiling my list of suitable venues I took in a number of factors that included: accessibility, distance to travel, interest, relevance, message, and use.
List.
A church. Too easy.
Ramsgate Station. Will save for later project.
Manston Airport. Chosen.
Prince’s Restaurant. May use in later project.
Shopping arcade. Refuse to go to Bluewater.
Pier Cafe. Will save for later project.
My garden shed. Bit small. May be used in another project.
Community Centre. Although I work there as a volunteer I don’t want to push
the relationship. Will use it in other projects.
Manston Airport is an ex fighter station from WWII that was later used by the USAF as a bomber base during the Cold War. Its extremely long runway dates from that time. Since 1960 it has run intermittently as a regional airport but without a great deal of success. The last passenger carrier pulled out in 2011 leaving only a few cargo planes that have made it their home.
In April this year KLM are starting up an air ferry service to Schiphol which will bring much needed work to the area.
My picture shows it in all its abandoned glory, clean and polished waiting for its first passengers for two years. The only people are two maintenance men heading fruitlessly to the unmanned departure gates. I would liked to have featured the arrivals gates with their empty Customs post but was told that for security reasons this was not allowed. The illuminated poster to the right is a promise of things to come, although at the moment it looks like an empty promise.
